Healthcare for students

Studying in Turin and need a doctor?

If you are studying in Turin, the right healthcare pathway depends on your coverage: you can access the Italian National Health Service (SSN), use an EHIC card, or book a private student appointment.

I am registered with the Italian NHS (SSN)

If you study in Turin but your residence or family doctor is in another Italian town or region, you can choose between two pathways depending on the duration of your stay.

Option A · Occasional consultation

I need a doctor while studying away from home

If you already have a family doctor in another Italian town but are temporarily living in Turin, you can request an occasional consultation with a general practitioner.

For a single occasional visit, you do not need to change the family doctor registered in your home town.

Official Italian NHS occasional consultation rates:

  • Office consultation (visita ambulatoriale) €20
  • Home visit (visita domiciliare) €35
Option B · Temporary GP in Turin

Staying in Turin for more than 3 months

If you are studying in Turin for an extended period, you can apply for temporary healthcare registration and have a local family doctor, instead of paying for occasional visits each time.

Consultations · prescriptions · referrals for specialist visits and tests · continuity of care

Suitable for you if:

  • you are covered by the Italian NHS (SSN) but reside outside Piedmont;
  • you are in Turin for study purposes for more than 3 months;
  • you want an assigned family doctor during your academic stay.

Before you begin, prepare:

  • ✓ valid photo ID (passport or national identity card);
  • ✓ Italian health card (Tessera Sanitaria / Codice Fiscale);
  • ✓ certificate of university enrollment or self-declaration of study stay;
  • ✓ document confirming deregistration/revocation from your previous GP in your home municipality (required by ASL Città di Torino for initial temporary registration).

How clinic care works

  • • Consultations by appointment
  • • Clinic sessions throughout the week
  • • Consultations in Italian and English
  • • Corso Francia 212 · Monte Grappa Metro
  • • Digital services for registered patients via NextComunica
  • • Medical certificates within the GP's scope, when clinically appropriate

How to request a temporary GP

  1. 1 Prepare documents
  2. 2 Open Salute Piemonte — Il mio medico
  3. 3 Search “Francesco Bottero”
  4. 4 Submit online request if available

Requires Italian digital identity (SPID or CIE). In the portal you can search for “Francesco Bottero” and verify whether the doctor has patient availability at the time of your request. Doctor availability must be checked on the portal at the time of request. Applications are processed by the ASL (online requests are normally completed within 5 working days).

European & UK Coverage

I have an EHIC / UK GHIC

If you are insured in an EU/EFTA country or the UK (holding an EHIC or UK GHIC) and are temporarily staying in Italy, your card gives you access to medically necessary healthcare through the Italian National Health Service.

You can see a contracted general practitioner for an occasional consultation.

Please bring with you to the clinic:

  • ✓ EHIC card, UK GHIC, or Provisional Replacement Certificate
  • ✓ Passport or national ID card
  • ✓ Any relevant medical records or current prescription details

Payment and insurance reimbursement

For occasional general practice consultations, direct payment may be required; keep the payment receipt and medical statement for reimbursement procedures with your home health insurer.

Private Practice for Students

I want a private appointment

The student private consultation is designed for a defined acute clinical issue or a specific medical need.

Includes:

  • ✓ Focused medical history and review
  • ✓ Targeted clinical physical examination
  • ✓ Diagnostic assessment and clear recommendations
  • ✓ Medical prescriptions when clinically appropriate
  • ✓ Guidance on follow-up or further tests

Student rates

  • Private office consultation €60
  • Private home visit in Turin (subject to availability) €100

Same-day appointments may be available depending on schedule.

You do not need to be registered with Dr Bottero as your NHS/SSN GP to book a private appointment.

This rate is reserved for actively enrolled university and higher education students. Proof of current student status may be requested.

Medical certificates for university requirements

If your university requires a medical certificate or healthcare form, certificates within the doctor's professional scope may be considered when supported by the clinical assessment and/or available medical documentation.

If your university has provided a specific form or requirements, please bring or send them before the appointment.

  • Simple medical certificate — student rate €40

If the certificate directly relates to the condition assessed during a €60 student medical appointment, its issue, when clinically appropriate and within the doctor's scope, is included in the appointment.

More complex certificates or forms are assessed in advance according to the documentation requested.

Frequently asked questions by students

I already have a family doctor in another Italian town. Can I see a doctor in Turin?

Yes. If you are temporarily living outside your home municipality or healthcare district, you can consult a general practitioner for an occasional consultation at official NHS rates (€20 in-office / €35 home visit). If you stay in Turin for study purposes for more than 3 months, you can apply for temporary healthcare registration and choose a local family doctor in Turin.

Can I register with Dr Bottero as my family doctor while studying in Turin?

If you meet the requirements for temporary health coverage for study in Piedmont and Dr Francesco Bottero has patient availability at the time of your request, you can select him through the regional doctor registration portal. What documents are required to temporarily register with a GP in Turin?

To apply for temporary registration for study, you need: a valid photo ID (passport or national ID card), Italian health card / Codice Fiscale, university enrollment certificate or self-declaration of study stay, and documentation of deregistration/revocation from your previous GP in your home municipality (required by ASL Città di Torino for initial temporary registration).

Do I have to give up my home family doctor?

Yes: ASL Città di Torino requires the revocation/deregistration of your home doctor to activate temporary health registration in Turin. Temporary registration for study is valid from 3 months up to 1 year and can be renewed by providing renewed proof of enrollment if study requirements continue.

Do I have to visit the ASL health office in person to register with a doctor?

Many doctor selection procedures can be completed online via the regional Salute Piemonte portal using Italian digital credentials (SPID or CIE), with standard processing within 5 working days. For initial temporary registration of non-resident students or when documents require verification, applications are validated by the health district offices of ASL Città di Torino.

I have an EHIC or UK GHIC. Can I consult a family doctor?

Yes, for medically necessary care during your temporary stay in Italy. Bring your EHIC (or UK GHIC) card and a valid photo ID (passport or national ID card) to the clinic.

I am an international student without an EHIC or GHIC.

Your healthcare access options depend on your citizenship, residence permit status, and insurance coverage. In many situations, international students can voluntarily register with the Italian National Health Service (SSN) through the ASL. If you need immediate medical attention, private student medical appointments are readily available.
